The words that come to mind that almost captures the feel of St. Kitts and Nevis are - panoramic and idyllic. The twin islands are your dream holiday come true. Below are a few things you need to know about the two islands before going there.

  1. The two islands are a federation located on the leeward side of West Indies.
  2. They are the smallest nation state in the Americas both by surface area and by population. Saint Kitts is the larger of the two and thus hosts the capital - Basseterre. They are joined by a 3 kilometer shallow channel known as the Narrows.
  3. Nearby neighbors include the islands of St. Barths, Saint Martin, sint Eustatius, Antigua and Barbado among others.
  4. It has a population of 51,538. Its demographic spread is as follows; black (90.4%), Mulatto (5%), East Indian (3%), White (1%).
  5. During the Pre-Columbian times, Saint Kitts was referred to as Liamuiga meaning fertile land and Nevis as Oualie meaning land of beautiful waters. Kalinago Indians are the ancestral owners of the islands.
  6. Christopher Columbus is credited as being the first European to spot the island in 1493.
  7. The Islands' governance system is Parliamentary democracy under federal constitutional monarchy, with the monarch being Queen Elizabeth II.
  8. The official language in the islands is English.
  9. The Economic mainstay of the islands is tourism, agriculture and light manufacturing.
  10. The country is credited with the economic tourism concept. All you need to do is make an investment and you will become a citizen.
  11. A typical street celebration in the country will involve parades, street dances, salsa, jazz, steelpan, calypso, and soca.
