House Spotting in Palm Springs
By Anita Draycott
Palm Springs is a living museum with some of the world’s largest and best-preserved concentrations of modernist architecture of the 1940s, 50s and 60s This and more about designers who shaped the houses of the time, from Richard Neutra to Albert Frey, you’ll learn on Robert Ember’s Modern Architecture Tour. He explains that the wealthy arrived in the Palm Springs area in the 1920s, followed by movie moguls, stars and gangsters in the ‘30s. After WWII, the area became a boomtown for snowbirds. On his three-hour tour he’ll point out the former homes of Howard Hughes, Elvis Presley, Jack Benny, Dinah Short, Spencer Tracy and Liberace.
Meet at the Palm Springs Visitors Center; $85 for a three-hour driving tour.
